a few of the books that have influenced my tales and writing
|
The Island - Peter Benchley : What would it be like if a band of villainous
pirates had survived on an island among the Turks and Caicos for
three-hundred years? A journalist and his son discover that, exactly. By
the author of 'Jaws', this tale explores the not so far fetched idea of a
band of people, isolated from the rest of the world and preying on
pleasure boats, might bring a bit of the 17th century into the present
day. They are ruthless, and they are ignorant, but more importantly, this
story illustrates a point of fact that we cannot ignore in modern society -
pirates are out there.

Kidnapped - Robert Louis Stevenson : Kidnapped by pirates, young David
Balfour manages to escape his captors during a storm and treks across
islands and across the unfamiliar Western Highlands of Scotland to return
home. A tale of murder and deception among the Jacobites.

Stevenson
Treasure Island - Robert Louis Stevenson : A tale of
pirates and treasure. Jim Tanner meets the mysterious
Captain Billy Bones, followed by Black Dog, Blind Pew,
and even Long John Silver and Isreal Hands and begins his
journey to Skeleton Island in search of the long lost treasure
of the notorious Captain Flint. Truly, one of the classic
pirate tales, and a must read for any pirate enthusiast.

Blackbeard's Ghost - retold by Mary Carey : Based on the 1968
Walt Disney movie of the same name, this is a fanciful tale of
Blackbeard's Inn, run by a group of elderly ladies who are all
descendants of the infamous pirate, and the ruthless crook who is
trying to steal the property away to build a casino. A young man
comes along, hired to be the coach of a local high school track team,
and through an ancient artifact and incantation, happens to call fortht
he ghost of Blackbeard. Together they help to keep the crooks from
taking the inn, thus saving the day. One of my earliest pirate books,
and the one which did the most to spur my interest.

Moll Flanders : The History and Misfortune of the Famous Moll
Flanders, Etc. : A classic tale by Daniel Defoe of a woman's misery
during the early 1700s; a young orphan who is raised by the charity of
others, but eventually must make her own way, first as a whore, then
by attempting to marry money. Impoverished, she turns to thieving, and
is eventually caught and sentenced to transport to the colonies of
America. In the land of opportunity that is America, Moll finally finds
good fortune and prosperity, and is even able to return to England.
This is a fine tale, told in the very style of the day, and full of insights
into everyday living during the time.
