a few of the books that have influenced my tales and writing

A General History Of The Robberies & Murders Of The Most Notorious
Pirates - Captain Charles Johnson : Probably the most famous book of
pirates, this book was originally published in 1724, during the "Golden
Age of Piracy." Written by a mysterious 'Captain Johnson', many have
surmised that the author is actually Daniel Defoe (Robinson Crusoe,
Moll Flanders, etc.) Written in the style of the day, this book gives a
vivid account of many of the most famous of pirates from the pages of
history; Edward Teach (aka Blackbeard,) John "Calico Jack" Rackam,
Anne Bonny, Mary Read, William Kidd, and many more. Truly, this is
required reading for any pirate enthusiast.

Blackbeard The Pirate: A Reprisal of His Life and Times - Robert E.
Lee : Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, was likely the most infamous of
all pirates, to such a degree that his name has become almost mythical.
Robert E. Lee (not the Civil War general) has done an outstanding job
of digging into documented history to separate fact from fiction in this
telling of the notorious pirate captain's life. Lee's writing style is such
that this historical perspective is both informative and fascinating; a
real page-turned of a history book. Also, beyond the accounting of
Edward Teach, the book gives us a look into the society of England and
her American colonies of the time, giving us a better understanding of
pirates and piracy in general.

Under The Black Flag : The Romance and the Reality of Life Among
The Pirates - David Cordingly : A most excellent perspective on the
lives of some of the most notorious pirates in history; how they
lived, and how they died. This book illustrates in fine detail the
circumstances of the times that enabled the freebooting rogues to
plague the shipping lanes and islands of the world. Cordingly
covers not only the pirates themselves, but the political atmosphere,
the living conditions of sailors upon the seas, the ships on which
they sailed, and even the devices of torture used by the British navy
and the pirates themselves. A rich history of heroes and villains.

The Pirate Hunter : The True Story of Captain Kidd - Richard
Zacks: A book to dispel myths and rumours about one of the most
famous of all pirates, Zacks has done extensive research into the
events and deals leading up to the labelling of Captain William Kidd
as a pirate. From the investment by wealthy merchants, to the building
of the Adventure Galley, and the eventual mutiny by Kidd's crew, 'The
Pirate hunter' chronicles in fine detail the events that lead to the trial
and hanging of Kidd, including the demand by the East India Company
and their demand for somebody's head.

Real Pirates : The Untold Story of The Whydah from slave ship to
pirate ship : The official companion book to the exhibit sponsored by the
National Geographic. For more information, including tour dates, go to
Expedition Whydah. There is nothing more inspiring to a writer than to
walk among that of which he writes, and the artifacts and narrative of the
Whydah exhibit brings to life the dangers and rewards of the pirates who
roamed the seas during the Golden Age of Piracy. The exhibit is a must
see for any pirate enthusiast, young and old alike.

The Art Of The Sailor : Knotting, Splicing and Ropework - Hervey
Garrett Smith : For me, this has been an absolutely invaluable source of
information and reference, both in writing and in my regular job as a
firefighter. One of the necessary skills of both sailors and firefighters is
basic knotwork, and the explanations and illustrations contained in this
book make such tasks simple. Everything is covered, from lifesaving
stopper knots to haul somebody out of the sea, to decorative mats for
wiping your feet. Highly recommended to anybody who wants to know
the ropes.
